It's Friday, a no homework day!
MATH Students worked in pairs practicing multiplication facts. They used non-faced playing cards (1-10) and played "War." It was fun, and hopefully challenged them to learn their facts better for next Friday.
SPELLING I taught students their usernames & passwords for www.spellingcity.com. They took this week's spelling test online using headphones. It was very successful! Next week I will show students some of the games available on this website. They're great for spelling reinforcement, and will make spelling fun for those who struggle and challenge those who are naturally gifted spellers. I will be challenging gifted spellers with additional lists next week. There will be incentives, too. (I'll send an instruction sheet next week home with their usernames & passwords for this website next Tuesday.)
ART I spent 30 minutes teaching students how to use a ruler to measure inches, half inches and quarter inches. For a few it was new information. I ran around the classroom helping students put a one inch border around drawing paper. I think we're now ready to gravitate toward more creative ventures in art!
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT The whole 5th grade watched "For the Birds" on the Pixar Shorts DVD. We related it to school, and how the small birds teased and bullied the big blue bird who just wanted to fit in. I believe students truly understood the deeper meaning of being kind and loving to others who may be a little bit different that they are.
